From Wat Arun Inspiration to Contemporary Thai Patterns! EIT SSRU Invites Chiba University Students to Join a Creative Design Workshop

The Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, organized the “Wat Arun Inspired Thai Pattern Workshop” for students from Chiba University, Japan, providing an opportunity to explore Thai art, design, and culture through a creative learning experience.

The workshop was honored by Assistant Professor Jitima Suathong, who served as the instructor and shared insights into creative concepts and design processes. Faculty members and students from the Graphic and Multimedia Design Program also joined as assistant instructors and provided guidance and support to the participants throughout the activity.

The workshop began with an exploration of the origins and distinctive characteristics of the decorative patterns found at Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan, particularly floral and botanical motifs created through the decoration of glazed ceramic tiles and Chinese porcelain. Participants then interpreted and simplified these design elements into contemporary graphic forms.

The students subsequently created souvenirs using the Layered Stencil Painting technique. This technique involves separating the pattern into different layers using stencil templates and gradually applying color layer by layer until the complete pattern is formed. Participants were also encouraged to select their own color palettes and add a personal identity to their creations under the concept “Layer by Layer, Make It Yours.”

This activity demonstrated how Thai art and cultural heritage can be adapted through contemporary design processes, while providing a hands-on learning experience and promoting artistic, design, and cultural exchange between Thai and Japanese students. The workshop was held in Room 4244, Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, on September 2, 2026.
